Christmas activities to do with the family in and around Porthmadog

Well we’re officially into the festive season now; December has started, the first advent window has opened and the UK has seen it’s first snowfall. It’s official!

December is a great time to have a lovely break with the family and here in Porthmadog we’ve got lots of Christmas activities to enjoy, with fun for all the family.

Santa Trains – Welsh Highland Railway

The annual Santa trains run on the weekends of 9^th and 10^th, 16^th and 17^th and Fri  22^nd  -Sat 23^rd December. There’s a present for every child and more importantly a sherry and a mince pie for the adults!

The train leaves from Porthmadog and travels through the scenic countryside to Beddgelert in both the morning and afternoon. You will need to book in advance. Find out more here and book by ringing 01766 516070.

Create a Christmas Wreath – Penrhyn Castle

Penrhyn Castle are celebrating the traditional family side of Christmas this year, with crafts , music and Christmas cooking in the Victorian kitchen.

You’ll have a chance to make a Christmas wreath (booking is essential – book online here) where everything you’ll use will be collected from the gardens and woodland around the castle.

Breakfast with Father Christmas- Plas Newydd House and Gardens

Which child would not like to have breakfast with Father Christmas? Set in the cosy cafe at Plas Newydd, the children will get a story, a bacon roll and a present from Santa, whilst the adults can settle in by the fire, and pretend they’re not listening to the story that Santa tells the children!

Booking for children is essential, call 01248 714 795. This is before the house opens and so admission is extra, but the house has been decorated for Christmas too so is well worth a visit.

Brunch or Afternoon Tea with Santa at Greenwood Forest Park

Taking place on the 8^th and 13^th to 15^th December , these events are really popular. Children will get the chance to eat festive food, play in the Wood Barn and meet Santa to tell them what they want for Christmas and get a gift too.

Christmas Donkeys at Ffarm Moelyci

Head down to the farm on Sunday 17^th December, and not only will you find some Snowdonian donkeys, but there’ll also be a Christmas market, mulled wine and local live music.

The event runs from 12pm to 8pm and is free to attend, although donations are welcome.

With so many different Christmas events, there’s no reason not to make a getaway this December. Come to our hotel in Porthmadog, for a lovely winter break. We’ve also got Christmas events on in the evenings on the 8th and 15^th December if you’re planning on a break without the kids.
