Things to do in North Wales that don’t involve Christmas!

You may have noticed we’ve been all over Christmas the last few weeks with posts on markets, shopping and events for all the family, but if Christmas isn’t your thing or you don’t have a festive bone in your body, you may wish to head over to us in North Wales and hide out until the whole thing is over.

We’ve got a whole host of places to visit and events going on that are completely un-related to tinsel, turkey or that man with the beard, so come and visit and take a break from it all. Take a look at some of our suggestions:

National Slate Museum – Llanberis

Telling the history of the areas slate mines, the National Slate Museum is open through the month 10am to 4pm (but closed Saturdays). As you walk through the Victorian workshops you’ll see where the slate that was mined was actually worked on. The museum tells the story of the slate mines, the quarrymen and the engineers and gives you a chance to get an insight into quarry life. Even better it’s free entry.

Bodelwyddan Castle and Park

Set in beautiful parkland, Bodelwyddan Castle has a wealth of treasures to explore including art and artefacts and a World War I trenches experience.  Head outside to explore the formal walled gardens, the Welsh fruit orchard or take a woodland walk. You can also explore the rooms of the house. Opening times for general visitors is just on weekends; 10:30am to 4pm.

Llanfair Slate Caverns

Following on the theme of slate, Llanfair Slate Caverns is a great place to visit to experience the slate caverns as the miners before you would have done.  The tunnels and caverns are over a hundred years old, and you can wander through some of the oldest slate in the world. Not a Christmas decoration in site, and even dog friendly!

Annual Charity Model Railway Show

If trains are your thing, this is likely to appeal. Happening on 30th December – starting at 10am – at St Michael’s Church in Conwy, the model railway club will be displaying their ‘N-Guage layout’. Refreshments are on offer, and it’s just £2.00 with all proceeds going to the Ty Gobaith Children’s hospice.

Llandudno Toy and Train Fair

Following on in the train theme, Llandudno toy and train fair is happening on 27th December 10:30am at Venue Cymru in Llandudno. With lots of collectable toys and trains, even if you just want a wander you’re bound to find a toy that will send you down memory lane. Adults £2.00, children just 75p!
