Fun family activities this summer holiday

Schools out, and you’ve now got six weeks to occupy the kids with fun activities that don’t cost the earth. 

If you’re getting ready for the family holiday and are coming to visit us in Porthmadog, or you’re looking to occupy the kids on balmy summer days out, we’ve been looking for ways to keep them interested, burn off some energy and have a good time whilst you can sit back, relax and enjoy the very rare experience of an August school holiday with sunshine. What’s more, most of the activities listed here are free too.

Llanbedrog Beach Fun Day

There’s nothing better than a day at the beach and as well as a paddle and some sandcastle building, if you head to the Llanbedrog Beach Fun Day on 22^nd July 27^th, between 11am to 4pm you’ll find loads of fun activities for the kids.

As well as a competition for the best sandcastle which will keep the kids building and digging for ages, there’s beach football and rock pooling.

For the more adventurous, you can give kayaking and paddle boarding a go. These sessions are five pounds but everything else is free.

Tree Walk

Get the kids out and exploring nature with this easy one mile tree walk at Coed Cymerau Isaf. Woodland Trust Officers will help you and your children learn how to identify trees and their leaves. The Tree Walk will take place on 1^sT August between 2pm and 4pm.

Dogs are welcome, and it’s a great place to get into nature and burn off some energy. To book ring 01286 685498.

Caernarfon Pirate Festival

Taking place between August 17-19^th, the Pirate Festival in Caernarfon is a great family day out. As well watching live cannon shows on the Black Pirate Schooner Vilma, there’ll be pirates wielding their cutlasses and daggers as they fight each other for their treasures.

You’ll get to see a real pirate ship and you’ll also get to see musketry demonstrations. A real fun weekend for kids. Caernarfon Castle is also close by and well worth a visit.

Crafts at Tan-y-Bwlch train station

Every Wednesday through the summer why not take a train from Porthmadog up to Tan-y-Bwlch station to the craft days they’re having there?

If you’re lucky you’ll be able to have a steam train ride up to the station. Once there, kids will be able to draw or paint on recycled pieces of slate from the Llechwedd Slate Caverns to make unique pieces of craft.  Paper crafts are also on offer.

Alongside crafts, there’s a great play area, a lovely cafe in the station and some woodland walks nearby. Enough to keep everyone occupied for quite a while.
