Summer of Fun at Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railway

Many people coming through Porthmadog every year take a trip on the Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railway. Being able to travel through the beautiful and breathtaking landscape of the Snowdonia National Park on a steam train either up to Caernarfon or over to Blaenau Ffestiniog makes a perfect day out for all the family.

Each summer though, the railway goes one better with its Summer of Fun. Each year it puts on a range of activities for all the family, and here’s a taste of what’s on offer. With a station at Porthmadog, it’s just a hop, skip and a jump away from our hotel near Porthmadog.

Italian Nights

Take a round trip to Blaenau Ffestiniog on Wednesdays between July 6th and August 23rd and you’ll be saying ‘Mamma mia!’. Italian Nights on Wednesday promise to be a fantastic feast – Italian food is served on the journey out as you wind your way through the mountains.

You’ll need to book by 3pm on the day (where you’ll also be able to choose from the menu). Call 01766 516024.

Chippy Nights

If you prefer something a bit more traditional, why not try the Chippy train on Tuesdays and Thursdays from Tuesday July 25th to Thursday August 23rd.

As well as a scenic trip on the 18:05 to Blaenau Ffestiniog you’ll get your choice of fish, sausage, chicken or pie and chips  from Ian’s Fish Restaurant at Blaenau to eat on the way back.

Stuffed full of food, you can relax on the trip back before a meandering walk back to our pub for a few drinks before bed.

Vintage 1940s and Classic Car Day

Hop on the train from Porthmadog to Blaenau Ffestiniog for the Vintage 1940s day, 10am to 4pm on Sunday 30th July.

Be prepared to greet young evacuees with their gas masks off the train and rub shoulders with land girls in this vintage experience.

Alongside the classic cars, there’ll also be a fairground,  live music and dancing. All you need to do is get on the train at Porthmadog!

Footplate rides for the kids

What kid does not want a ride on the footplate of a narrow gauge steam locomotive? Now’s the time to get them interested in steam trains with footplate rides every Saturday at Porthmadog station, from July 29th to August 26th.

The engine driver will tell you all about the steam locomotive, before you take a ride through the station area. You’ll also get a souvenir certificate at the end to take home with you.

Jazz in the Park

If an evening of jazz is more your thing hop on the 19:15 from Porthmadog to Tan-y-Bwlch station on Friday 3rd, 10th or 17th of August.

Regulars Dr Jazz will be playing a range of jazz favourites, whilst you enjoy a BBQ or cheese platter, and drinks to wash down the jazz with. Hopefully the warm weather will hold out but if not there’ll also be indoor seating.

These evenings are really popular, so you’ll need to pre-book and it’s advisable to pre-order food too. Contact 01766 516024 to book.
