Craft Ale Tour of Porthmadog

Summer brings a terrible thirst with it, and what better way to quench it than with one of Wale’s finest local craft ales?

If you’re a craft ale fan, why not spend a weekend break or even come for a week or two with a bit of a tour round the local hostelries. We’ve pulled together some of the top spots in Porthmadog for the authentic ale experience.

Purple Moose Brewery

The Purple Moose Brewery is a 40 barrel micro brewery based in Porthmadog. Having been brewing their own individual ales for 13 years now, you’ll find a wide range on offer.

Their beer is multi award winning with the Elderflower Ale winning CAMRA Champion Speciality Beer of Wales 2017. The Chocolate Moose (a rich chocolate and vanilla stout) won the Bronze for Champion Keg beers in the SIBA National Beer Awards, to name just a couple of the many awards the ales have won.

As well as being able to buy online, you can also buy their beer at the Australia (see more below) which is a Purple Moose Brewery pub.

If you’re really interested in how they make their ale, you can also take a tour.

Golden Fleece Inn

We couldn’t create a craft ale tour without including our own fantastic range of ales at the Golden Fleece Inn.

Experience some of Wales’ finest ales on tap in our unique and quirky cave bar as well as a range of revolving guest ales.

Why not pair with some of our BBQ bourbon pork ribs or a rib eye steak? Our beer garden is the ideal place in the summer to experience a good pint of ale alongside some hearty homemade food.

The Australia

The Australia is the brewery tap for Purple Moose Brewery. Offering a range of the brewery’s cask, keg and bottled ales including their Snowdonia Ale, Glaslyn Ale, Elderflower Ale, and Dark Side of the Moose.

The Inn dates back to the 1850s but has recently had a modern makeover with exposed brickwork, and even tables with a charging port for your mobile phone.

Alongside the beer, the pub serves traditional pub fayre from Wednesday to Sunday and is dog friendly too.

Spooners Pub

If you like to enjoy a real ale sitting alongside stream trains, then Spooners Pub is the place to be.

The pub is next to Porthmadog’s station for the Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railway. Situated in the old goods shed, the pub sells up to eight ales at any one time including both local and national ales.

The pub offers locally sourced food and during the day is also a coffee shop so there’s something for everyone.

This is just a small selection of the great choice of local pubs that offer local and craft ales but a good start to ensure you taste a little bit of Wales on your holiday with us.
